A-Phenicol Drop 10 ml 0.5%

Description

Indications:
A-Phenicol is indicated for the treatment of ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea caused by A-Phenicol-susceptible organisms. These include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, E. coli, H. influenzae, Klebsiella/Enterobacter spp, Moraxella lacunata, and Neisseria species.

Pharmacology:
Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It interferes with the transfer of activated amino acids from soluble RNA to ribosomes, thus preventing bacterial growth and replication.

Dosage & Administration:

• Adults and Children: Instill 1 or 2 drops into the conjunctival sac 4-6 times per day for the first 72 hours, followed by 1 or 2 drops every 4 hours thereafter.
• Treatment should continue for approximately 7 days, but should not exceed 3 weeks without re-evaluation by the physician.

Interaction:
The use of Chymotrypsin may be inhibited if given simultaneously with A-Phenicol.

Contraindications:
A-Phenicol is contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol or any of its components.

Side Effects:
Short-term topical use of A-Phenicol has not shown systemic adverse reactions. However, some common side effects include burning, stinging, conjunctival hyperemia, blood dyscrasia, allergic or inflammatory reactions, and vesicular or maculopapular dermatitis.

Pregnancy & Lactation:
The safety of A-Phenicol during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. Therefore, it should be used only when deemed essential by the physician.

Precautions & Warnings:

• A-Phenicol should not be used for minor infections or as a prophylactic treatment.
• Repeated courses and prolonged treatment should be avoided.
• Blood dyscrasias such as granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, and moderate anemia may occur after prolonged ophthalmic use.

Overdose Effects:
Accidental ingestion is unlikely to cause toxicity due to the low antibiotic content.

Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool place (between 2°C-8°C) and keep dry. Protect from light and keep out of the reach of children. Avoid contact between the dropper tip and any surface to prevent contamination. Do not use after 30 days of the first opening.
