A-Phenicol Eye/Ear Drops – (0.50%)
Description
Indications
A-Phenicol is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, specifically infections affecting the conjunctiva and cornea. It is effective against bacteria that are susceptible to A-Phenicol, including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella/Enterobacter species, Moraxella lacunata, and Neisseria species.

Pharmacology
Chloramphenicol, the active ingredient in A-Phenicol, is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, preventing the transfer of activated amino acids from soluble RNA to ribosomes, thereby stopping bacterial growth.
Dosage & Administration
Adults and Children:
Instill 1 to 2 drops into the conjunctival sac 4 to 6 times daily for the first 72 hours. After that, apply the drops every 4 hours as needed. Treatment typically lasts for about 7 days. However, it should not be used for more than 3 weeks without a physician’s evaluation.

Drug Interactions
The effectiveness of Chymotrypsin may be reduced when used simultaneously with A-Phenicol.
Contraindications
A-Phenicol should not be used in individuals who have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol or any of the components of this formulation.
Side Effects
Short-term topical use of A-Phenicol has not been associated with systemic adverse effects. However, some users may experience:
- Burning or stinging sensation
- Conjunctival redness (hyperemia)
- Allergic or inflammatory reactions
- Vesicular or maculopapular dermatitis
- Rare cases of blood disorders (blood dyscrasia)
Pregnancy & Lactation
The safety of A-Phenicol during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. It should only be used if deemed essential by a physician.
Precautions & Warnings
- Do not use A-Phenicol for minor infections or as a preventive measure.
- Avoid repeated or prolonged use, as it may lead to blood disorders such as granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, and mild anemia.
- Consult a doctor before prolonged use.
Overdose Effects
Accidental ingestion of this medication is unlikely to cause toxicity due to its low antibiotic content.

Storage Conditions
- Store at a cool temperature (2°C-8°C) in a dry place, away from direct light.
- Keep out of reach of children.
