AERON 10 mg
Description
Indications Aeron is prescribed for:
- Preventing and managing chronic asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Alleviating symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR), including both Seasonal and Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Take this medication as advised by a registered physician.
Pharmacology Montelukast, the active ingredient in Aeron, is a selective leukotriene receptor antagonist that works by inhibiting the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1). Cysteinyl leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4) originate from arachidonic acid metabolism and are released by various cells, such as mast cells and eosinophils. These leukotrienes contribute to asthma and allergic rhinitis by causing airway swelling, smooth muscle constriction, and other inflammatory responses, which lead to asthma symptoms.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and adolescents (15 years and older) with asthma or seasonal allergic rhinitis: 10 mg Montelukast tablet once daily.
- Pediatric patients with asthma or seasonal allergic rhinitis:
- 6 to 14 years: 5 mg tablet once daily.
- 2 to 5 years: 4 mg tablet once daily.
- 6 months to 5 years: 4 mg oral granules once daily. These can be taken directly or mixed with cold water or soft food at room temperature.
- Use in pediatric patients: The safety and effectiveness of Montelukast have been confirmed in well-controlled studies for children aged 6 months to 14 years, with similar efficacy profiles to adults.
- Hepatic Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment is required for mild-to-moderate hepatic impairment.
- Renal Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment is necessary.
- Elderly Patients: Pharmacokinetics are similar between elderly and younger adults; no dosage adjustment is required.
Take this medication as advised by a registered physician.
Drug Interactions Aeron has been used alongside other common asthma treatments without an increased risk of adverse reactions. Drug interaction studies show that the recommended dose of Aeron does not significantly affect the pharmacokinetics of theophylline, prednisone, prednisolone, oral contraceptives, terfenadine, digoxin, or warfarin. However, drugs that induce hepatic metabolism, such as phenobarbital, may reduce the effectiveness of Aeron by decreasing its plasma concentration. Clinical monitoring is advised when combining Aeron with potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers like phenobarbital or rifampin.
Contraindications Aeron should not be used by individuals with known hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, and upper respiratory tract infections.
- Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, irritability, sleep disorders, dry mouth, muscle discomfort, and seizures.
- Rare: Angioedema, hallucinations, liver disorders, memory loss, palpitations, pulmonary eosinophilia, and suicidal tendencies.
Pregnancy & Lactation Montelukast crosses the placenta in animal studies, but there is limited data on its effects in pregnant women. It should be used during pregnancy only if necessary. As it may be excreted in breast milk, caution is advised when prescribing to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
- Aeron is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks or status asthmaticus. Patients should always have a rescue inhaler available.
- Therapy with Aeron may continue during asthma exacerbations, but it should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids.
- Aeron should not be used as the sole treatment for exercise-induced bronchospasm.
- Patients with aspirin sensitivity should continue avoiding aspirin and NSAIDs while using Aeron, as it does not prevent aspirin-induced bronchoconstriction.
Overdose Effects In case of overdose, most symptoms align with the known safety profile of Aeron and may include abdominal pain, drowsiness, thirst, headache, vomiting, and hyperactivity. Standard supportive measures should be taken, such as removing unabsorbed material from the digestive tract and monitoring the patient clinically.
