Afrin 0.025% Nasal Drop

Description

Indications
Afrin is used to relieve nasal congestion associated with conditions such as acute or chronic rhinitis, the common cold, sinusitis, upper respiratory allergies, epistaxis (nosebleeds), and hay fever. Additionally, it serves as a nasal decongestant in cases of otitis media.

Pharmacology
Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Afrin, is a sympathomimetic amine derived from imidazoline. It acts as a direct agonist on alpha-adrenoceptors, without affecting beta-adrenoceptors. When applied topically to the nasal mucosa, it induces rapid and prolonged vasoconstriction of the arterioles, reducing blood flow and minimizing mucosal swelling. This results in improved airway patency and enhanced nasal sinus drainage.

Dosage
Oxymetazoline Nasal Spray:

• Adults and children (6 years and older): Administer 2 to 3 sprays in each nostril twice daily for a duration of 3 to 5 days.
• Elderly: No dosage adjustment is required for nasal administration.
• Children below 6 years: Not recommended for use.

Oxymetazoline Nasal Drops:

• Adults and children (6 years and older): Use 2 to 3 drops of 0.05% solution in each nostril twice daily, in the morning and evening.
• Children aged 2-5 years: Use 2 to 3 drops of 0.025% solution in each nostril twice daily, in the morning and evening.

Administration
How to use the nasal spray:

1. Shake the bottle gently and remove the dust cover.
2. Hold the spray with your forefinger and middle finger on either side of the nozzle, with your thumb supporting the base. Press down until a fine mist is released. If using for the first time or after a long interval, prime the applicator by pressing several times until the mist appears.
3. Clear your nostrils by gently blowing your nose.
4. Close one nostril and insert the nasal applicator into the other nostril. Keep your head slightly tilted forward and the spray upright.
5. Inhale gently through your nose while pressing down firmly on the applicator to release the spray.
6. Exhale through your mouth.
7. Repeat for the other nostril if required.

Cleaning Instructions:

• Remove the dust cover.
• Detach the nasal applicator carefully.
• Wash both the applicator and dust cover with warm water.
• Shake off excess water and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Avoid applying heat.
• Reattach the applicator and replace the dust cover.

Drug Interactions
Afrin Nasal Spray should not be used in patients currently receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing such treatment.

Contraindications
Afrin is contraindicated in individuals with cardiovascular diseases, hyperthyroidism, prostatic enlargement, angle-closure glaucoma, or hypersensitivity to any of its components.

Side Effects
Some users may experience mild local irritation, dryness of the mouth and throat, or temporary discomfort such as burning, stinging, sneezing, or increased nasal discharge.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation
The safety of Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride during pregnancy and lactation has not been fully established. However, it is generally not considered a significant risk during these periods. Use only if necessary and under medical supervision.

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid contact with the eyes.
• Do not use the spray for more than seven consecutive days without medical advice.
• Prolonged or frequent use may result in rebound congestion or worsening symptoms.

Overdose Effects
Excessive use may lead to local irritation and rebound nasal congestion. Treatment should be symptomatic.

Afrin belongs to the therapeutic class of Nasal Antihistamine Preparations, Nasal Decongestants, and other Nasal Preparations.

Storage Conditions

• Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light.
• Do not refrigerate or freeze.
• Keep out of reach of children.
