Description

Indications
Alarid is prescribed for the following conditions:

  • Preventive treatment of bronchial asthma
  • Management of allergic conditions, including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
  • Relief from itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
  • Treatment of allergy-related symptoms such as hay fever and urticaria

Use this medication only as directed by a registered physician.

Pharmacology
Ketotifen, the active ingredient in Alarid, exhibits anti-allergic properties and functions similarly to sodium cromoglycate in asthma prevention. Additionally, it possesses antihistamine effects and strong anti-anaphylactic properties, helping to prevent asthma attacks.

Ketotifen provides a sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions, separate from its anti-anaphylactic action. Studies on asthmatic patients indicate that oral Ketotifen is as effective as inhaled mast cell stabilizers. Standard antihistamines have not demonstrated similar efficacy in such cases.

Long-term clinical trials have shown that Ketotifen can significantly reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of asthma attacks. In some cases, patients have been completely relieved of symptoms. Additionally, gradual reduction in corticosteroid and bronchodilator use may be possible with continued treatment. However, the full preventive benefits of Ketotifen may take several weeks to establish. It is important to note that Ketotifen is not effective in treating acute asthma attacks.

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: 1 mg twice daily with food. In severe cases, the dose may be increased to 2 mg twice daily.
  • Children (above 3 years): 1 mg twice daily with food. Patients prone to sedation may begin with 0.5 to 1 mg at night for the first few days, as advised by a physician.
  • Elderly patients: Dosage is the same as for adults or as prescribed by a physician.

Use this medication only as directed by a registered physician.

Drug Interactions
Alarid may enhance the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol. A temporary reduction in platelet count has been reported in some patients using Ketotifen alongside oral antidiabetic medications. As a precaution, this combination should be avoided.

Contraindications
Patients using oral antidiabetic agents may experience a temporary reduction in platelet count when taking Ketotifen. Therefore, simultaneous use is not recommended. Although there is no evidence of teratogenic effects, Ketotifen is not advised for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Side Effects
Possible side effects may include:

  • Drowsiness (typically temporary and diminishes after a few days)
  • Dry mouth (in rare cases)
  • Mild dizziness (in isolated cases)

Use During Pregnancy & Lactation
Although no teratogenic effects have been identified, Ketotifen is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Patients should continue any previous asthma treatment for at least two weeks after starting Alarid to prevent worsening symptoms. This is particularly important for those using systemic corticosteroids or ACTH, as there may be a risk of adrenal insufficiency.
  • In case of an infection, Alarid treatment should be supplemented with appropriate antimicrobial therapy.
  • During the initial days of treatment, patients should avoid driving or operating machinery until they understand how the medication affects them.
  • Alcohol consumption should be avoided, as Alarid may enhance the effects of alcohol, sedatives, and antihistamines.

Overdose Effects
Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, drowsiness, headache, slow heart rate (bradycardia), and respiratory depression. In case of overdose, gastric lavage or induced vomiting is recommended. Supportive treatment should be provided as necessary.

Therapeutic Class
Cromoglycate & related drugs
