Ambrox SR 75 mg

Indications
Ambrox SR is indicated for the treatment of the following conditions:

• Productive cough
• Acute and chronic inflammatory disorders of the upper and lower respiratory tracts associated with thick mucus, including acute and chronic bronchitis
• Inflammatory diseases of the rhinopharyngeal tract (laryngitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, and rhinitis) with thick mucus
• Asthmatic bronchitis and bronchial asthma with thick sputum production
• Bronchiectasis
• Chronic pneumonia, among others

Pharmacology
Ambroxol is the active metabolite of bromhexine, and it has been shown to have a more potent bronchosecretolytic effect than its precursor, bromhexine. This metabolite aids in improving the rheology of sputum by a hydrating mechanism that leads to the liquefaction of mucus in the respiratory tract. This process helps to clear mucus more easily and reduces the sensation of breathlessness. Ambroxol also stimulates the production of surfactant phospholipids by alveolar cells, which reduces the surface tension in the alveoli. Additionally, it reduces bronchial hyperactivity and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the production of cellular cytokines and metabolites of arachidonic acid. In patients with COPD, Ambroxol can improve airway patency.

Dosage & Administration
The average daily dose of Ambrox SR (preferably after meals) is as follows:

• Pediatric Drops:
  • 0-6 months: 0.5 ml, twice a day
  • 6-12 months: 1 ml, twice a day
  • 1-2 years: 1.25 ml, twice a day
• Syrup:
  • 2-5 years: 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoon), 2-3 times a day
  • 5-10 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoon), 2-3 times a day
  • 10 years and adults: 10 ml (2 teaspoons), 3 times a day
• Sustained Release Capsule:
  • Adults and children over 12 years: 1 capsule, once daily.

Interactions
Ambrox SR should not be taken concurrently with antitussive medications (e.g., Codeine) as the liquefied mucus may become difficult to expectorate.

Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or Bromhexine.

Side Effects
Possible side effects may include gastrointestinal issues such as epigastric pain or a feeling of fullness in the stomach. In rare cases, allergic reactions such as rash, urticaria, or angioneurotic edema may occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Studies on teratogenicity and fetal toxicity have not shown any harmful effects of Ambroxol. However, it is recommended to avoid its use during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester. The safety of Ambroxol during lactation has not been established.

Precautions & Warnings
Ambrox SR should be used cautiously in patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers or those with convulsive disorders. It should also be administered with caution to patients with liver or kidney insufficiency.
