Arovent 10 mg
Description
Indications Arovent is prescribed for:
- Long-term management and prevention of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms associated with Allergic Rhinitis (AR), including both seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
Pharmacology Montelukast is a selective leukotriene receptor antagonist that inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1). Leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4) are inflammatory mediators derived from arachidonic acid and released by immune cells such as mast cells and eosinophils. These mediators contribute to airway inflammation, smooth muscle constriction, and edema, which are characteristic of asthma and allergic rhinitis. By blocking leukotriene activity, Montelukast helps reduce inflammation and improve airway function.
Dosage & Administration
For Adults and Adolescents (15 years and older)
- 10 mg tablet once daily
For Pediatric Patients with Asthma or Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
- 6 to 14 years: 5 mg tablet once daily
- 2 to 5 years: 4 mg tablet once daily
- 6 months to 5 years: 4 mg oral granules once daily (can be administered directly or mixed with a spoonful of cold water or soft food at room temperature)
Use in Pediatric Patients Montelukast has been evaluated in children aged 6 months to 14 years, showing similar safety and efficacy profiles as in adults.
Patients with Hepatic or Renal Insufficiency
- No dosage adjustment is needed for mild-to-moderate hepatic insufficiency or renal impairment.
Elderly Patients
- No dosage adjustment required, though the plasma half-life may be slightly longer in elderly individuals.
Drug Interactions Arovent can be used alongside standard asthma treatments without a notable increase in adverse effects. Clinical studies have shown that it does not significantly alter the pharmacokinetics of drugs such as theophylline, prednisone, prednisolone, oral contraceptives, terfenadine, digoxin, or warfarin. However, enzyme inducers like phenobarbital may reduce Montelukast levels by approximately 40%. Although no dosage adjustment is necessary, careful monitoring is advised when used with potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers such as phenobarbital or rifampin.
Contraindications Arovent is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to Montelukast or any of its components.
