Becospray 50 mcg/spray (Nasal Spray)
Description
Indications
Becospray nasal spray is used for the prevention and treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, including hay fever and non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis. It is also effective in preventing the recurrence of nasal polyps following surgical removal.
Pharmacology
When applied topically to the nasal mucosa, Beclomethasone Dipropionate exerts anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive effects. Although the precise mechanism is not fully understood, its effects may involve the reduction of mediator cells (basophils, leukocytes, and mast cells) at the epithelial level, a decrease in eosinophils, desensitization of sensory nerves to mechanical stimuli, reduced secretory response to cholinergic receptor stimulation, and inhibition of fibroblast activity. Additionally, it may work by inhibiting capillary dilation and permeability, stabilizing lysosomal membranes, and preventing the release of proteolytic enzymes.
Dosage
The dosage of intranasal Beclomethasone Dipropionate should be tailored to individual patient needs and response.
- Adults: The typical dose is two sprays (50 µg per spray) in each nostril twice daily. Some patients may prefer one spray in each nostril 3 to 4 times daily. The total daily dosage should not exceed 400 µg (8 sprays).
- Children (6 to 12 years): The usual dose is one spray in each nostril twice daily. If symptoms persist or are severe, the dose may be increased to two sprays per nostril twice daily.
- Children under 6 years: Not recommended due to a lack of safety studies. After initial treatment, some patients may be able to reduce their dosage to 100 µg (one spray in each nostril) once daily for maintenance therapy.
Administration
How to use the nasal spray:
- Shake the bottle gently and remove the dust cover.
- Hold the spray with your forefinger and middle finger on either side of the nozzle, with your thumb at the base. Press down until a fine mist is released. If using for the first time or after a long interval, prime the spray by pressing several times until a fine mist appears.
- Gently blow your nose to clear the nostrils.
- Close one nostril and insert the nozzle into the open nostril. Slightly tilt your head forward and keep the spray upright. Inhale through the nose while pressing the applicator to release the spray.
- Exhale through the mouth.
- Repeat in the same or the other nostril for subsequent doses.
Cleaning Instructions:
- Clean the nasal spray at least once a week.
- Remove the dust cover and nasal applicator.
- Wash both parts in warm water.
- Shake off excess water and let them dry naturally.
- Avoid applying heat to dry the parts.
- Reassemble the applicator and cover once dry.
Drug Interactions
No known drug interactions have been reported.
Contraindications
Becospray is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to any of its components. While nasal and sinus infections should be appropriately treated, they do not necessarily prevent the use of Beclomethasone nasal spray.
Side Effects
Rare cases of nasal septum perforation have been reported. Other uncommon side effects include nasal and throat dryness, irritation, unpleasant taste or smell, and mild nosebleeds. In rare instances, wheezing, cataracts, glaucoma, or increased intraocular pressure have been observed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Beclomethasone should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Since corticosteroid levels naturally increase during pregnancy, some women may require lower doses or no treatment at all. As corticosteroids are excreted in breast milk, caution is advised when administering Beclomethasone nasal spray to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
- Nasal and sinus infections should be treated but do not necessarily contraindicate Beclomethasone use.
- Caution is needed when switching patients from systemic steroids to Beclomethasone nasal spray, particularly if adrenal function is compromised.
Overdose Effects
Excessive inhalation over a short period may suppress hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) function. No immediate emergency measures are typically required, and normal function usually resumes within one or two days with continued treatment at recommended doses.
