Composition
Each capsule contains:
- Vitamin C – 60 mg
- Vitamin E – 30 mg
- Lutein (Pharmaceutical grade) – 6 mg
- Copper (as Cupric Oxide, Ph. grade) – 2 mg
- Zinc (as Zinc Oxide, BP) – 15 mg
Pharmacology
Vitamin C is present in high concentrations within the lens of the eye, significantly more than in the bloodstream. Long-term supplementation (over 10 years) has been linked to a lower risk of cataract formation. It plays a crucial role in neutralizing harmful free radicals.
Studies indicate that increased levels of Vitamin E in the bloodstream are associated with a decreased risk of cataracts, though its exact mechanism remains unclear. As an antioxidant, Vitamin E also contributes to free radical scavenging.
Lutein, a carotenoid primarily found in the macula, has been shown in both clinical and animal studies to help protect against oxidative and light-induced damage. Research suggests that high dietary intake of Lutein may lower the risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
Zinc, an essential trace mineral, plays a vital role in various enzymatic functions. A mild deficiency can result in taste and smell disturbances, delayed wound healing, and other symptoms. Severe deficiency may lead to skin lesions, hair loss, diarrhea, increased susceptibility to infections, and growth retardation in children.
Copper is essential for overall growth, skeletal health, and nervous system development. It is involved in numerous metabolic processes as a component of various enzymes.
