Cartilex 250 mg+200 mg
Description
Indications
Cartilex is a dietary supplement primarily used for the treatment of osteoarthritis affecting the knee, hip, spine, hand, and other joints. It is also beneficial in managing rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries, migraines, various skin conditions (such as psoriasis), vascular complications (including atherosclerosis), kidney stones, and inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and leaky gut syndrome.
Use this medication as per the advice of a registered physician.
Pharmacology
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino sugar synthesized by the body and found in certain foods. It plays a crucial role in forming glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as Hyaluronic Acid, Keratan Sulfate, and Chondroitin Sulfate, which bind to proteins to form proteoglycans—essential components of articular cartilage. Osteoarthritis develops when cartilage deteriorates. Supplementing with Glucosamine Sulfate increases the body’s Glucosamine levels, promoting cartilage formation and repair. Additionally, it activates chondrocytes, the cells responsible for producing GAGs and proteoglycans, aiding in joint health and overall connective tissue integrity.
Chondroitin Sulfate, another key component, is a glycosaminoglycan found in connective tissue, particularly in articular cartilage. It functions similarly to Glucosamine Sulfate by serving as a substrate for proteoglycan production. Additionally, it helps protect existing cartilage from premature degradation by inhibiting the activity of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes, which break down proteoglycans.
When used together, Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate exhibit a synergistic effect, proving highly effective in managing severe osteoarthritis. Clinical data indicate that this combination not only alleviates symptoms but also slows disease progression. In normal adults, it can aid in osteoarthritis prevention. For osteoarthritic pain, it offers comparable efficacy to NSAIDs with better tolerability and compliance. Furthermore, it supports the healing process in musculoskeletal injuries, including tendon and ligament strains.
Dosage & Administration
- 250/200 mg tablet: 1 to 2 tablets, three times daily. The dosage may be adjusted based on individual response and body weight. After 60 days, the dose may be reduced according to the patient’s needs and cost considerations. Recommended daily dosages based on body weight:
- Below 54 kg: 1000 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 800 mg Chondroitin Sulfate
- 54 kg to 91 kg: 1500 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 1200 mg Chondroitin Sulfate
- Over 91 kg: 2000 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 1600 mg Chondroitin Sulfate
- 750/600 mg tablet: 1 tablet twice daily or as directed by a physician.
Use this medication as per the advice of a registered physician.
Drug Interactions
No significant interactions have been reported between Glucosamine and Chondroitin and common drug classes such as antibiotics, antidepressants, antihypertensives, nitrates, antiarrhythmics, anxiolytics, hypoglycemic agents, antisecretives, or antiasthmatics. However, Chondroitin may enhance the blood-thinning effects of anticoagulants like Warfarin and Heparin.
Contraindications
There are no known contraindications for Glucosamine and Chondroitin. However, individuals with proven hypersensitivity to these compounds (such as allergies to shellfish or sulfur) should avoid use.
Side Effects
Clinical studies indicate that Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate are well tolerated with no significant side effects. Rarely, mild and reversible gastrointestinal discomfort (such as flatulence) may occur, similar to placebo effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The safety of Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate during pregnancy and lactation has not been extensively studied. Pregnant women or those planning to conceive should avoid supplementation. Caution is advised when using these compounds during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and they should only be taken under medical supervision.
Precautions & Warnings
- Patients with diabetes should monitor their blood glucose levels regularly while using Glucosamine supplements.
- No specific studies have been conducted in patients with renal or hepatic impairment; however, given their pharmacokinetic profile, no major restrictions are indicated. Nevertheless, those with severe kidney or liver conditions should use these supplements under medical supervision.
- Not recommended for children.
