Description
Indications
Ceevit tablet is used for the following purposes:
- Prevents and treats scurvy
- Supports wound healing and bone repair
- Aids in the formation of collagen in connective tissues
- Enhances iron absorption and treats anemia
- Contributes to the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells in bone marrow
- Boosts the immune system, helping prevent viral and bacterial infections
- Assists in the prevention and treatment of the common cold
- Promotes healthy capillaries, gums, and teeth
- Use this medicine as directed by a registered healthcare provider.
Pharmacology
Ceevit is a source of Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), an essential nutrient that the body cannot produce and must be obtained from diet or supplements. Vitamin C plays several vital roles in the body:
- It is required for tissue growth and repair, adrenal gland function, and enhanced immunity.
- Acts as an antioxidant, protecting the body from pollution, infections, and cellular damage.
- Functions as a coenzyme in the metabolism of drugs, cholesterol, and folic acid.
- Supports healthy hair, skin, and gums, and strengthens the immune system, maintaining overall well-being.
Dosage & Administration
Oral Administration:
- For scurvy prevention: 1 tablet daily
- For scurvy treatment: 1-2 tablets daily, with the dose adjusted based on the severity of the condition.
- For stroke risk reduction in the elderly: 1-2 tablets daily.
- For other conditions: 1 tablet daily or as prescribed by your physician.
The maximum safe dose is 2000 mg daily, divided into smaller doses.
Oral Sachet Administration:
- 1 sachet daily or as directed by a registered physician. The maximum dose is 2000 mg/day (equivalent to 4 sachets).
Parenteral Administration (IM, IV, Subcutaneous):
Ascorbic acid is usually given orally. However, if oral administration is not possible or if malabsorption is suspected, it can be given by injection.
- For intravenous injection, dilute with normal saline, water for injection, or glucose to reduce the risk of adverse reactions.
- Typical adult dose: 70-150 mg daily for general protection.
- For scurvy: 300 mg to 1 g daily.
- For enhanced wound healing: 300-500 mg daily for one to two weeks, both preoperatively and postoperatively.
- For severe burns: 1-2 g daily.
Note: Parenteral products should be checked for particulate matter or discoloration before administration.

Interactions
- Hazardous Interactions: Ascorbic acid may react adversely with aminophylline, bleomycin, erythromycin, and several other drugs including some antibiotics, corticosteroids, and sodium bicarbonate.
- Beneficial Interactions: Ascorbic acid can increase the half-life of paracetamol and enhance the absorption of iron from the gastrointestinal tract.
Side Effects
Ceevit generally has low toxicity, but excessive intake can lead to:
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal bloating
- Excessive iron absorption, which can be harmful for patients with certain conditions like thalassemia, sideroblastic anemia, and hemochromatosis
- Hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, and hemolysis in people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
- High doses (above 5 gm/day) during pregnancy may result in fetal abortion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Ceevit is safe in normal doses during pregnancy, but a daily intake exceeding 5 gm can result in miscarriage.
- Safe for use during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
- Megadoses (over 1000 mg daily) of Ceevit during pregnancy have caused scurvy in neonates.
- It is contraindicated for patients with hyperoxaluria.
- Ceevit can cause false positive results in certain lab tests for glucose, uric acid, creatinine, and occult blood.
