Indications
Ascorbic Acid (Ceevit DS) is indicated for:
- Prevention and treatment of scurvy.
- Helps in healing wounds and broken bones.
- Aids in the formation of collagen in connective tissues.
- Enhances iron absorption and aids in the treatment of anemia.
- Contributes to the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells in the bone marrow.
- Helps in preventing and managing viral and bacterial infections, boosting the immune system.

Pharmacology
Ceevit DS contains Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), a vital nutrient that the body cannot produce, meaning it must be obtained from diet or supplements. Vitamin C has numerous important functions:
- Tissue growth and repair: Vital for healthy growth and repair of tissues in the body.
- Adrenal gland function: Supports normal adrenal gland function.

Dosage & Administration

Oral tablet administration:
- For the prevention of scurvy: 1 tablet daily.
- For the treatment of scurvy: 1-2 tablets daily, with the dose adjusted based on the severity.
- For reducing the risk of stroke in the elderly: 1-2 tablets daily.
- In other cases: 1 tablet daily or as prescribed by a physician.
- Maximum safe dose: 2000 mg daily, in divided doses.

Oral sachet administration:
- 1 sachet daily or as directed by a registered physician.
- Maximum dose: 2000 mg/day (up to 4 sachets/day).

Parenteral administration (IM, IV, or subcutaneously):
- Ascorbic Acid is primarily administered orally; however, when oral intake is not possible, it can be given parenterally.
- For intravenous injection: Dilute the solution into a large volume (e.g., Normal Saline, Water for Injection, or Glucose) to reduce adverse reactions.
- Average protective dose for adults: 70-150 mg daily.
- For scurvy: 300 mg to 1 g daily.
- For wound healing: 300-500 mg daily for 7-10 days.
- For severe burns: Daily doses of 1-2 g are recommended.
- Larger doses are recommended in cases where the need for vitamin C is significantly increased.
Parenteral drug products should be visually inspected for particulate matter or discoloration before administration.
Interaction
- Potentially hazardous interactions: Ascorbic acid is incompatible in solution with medications such as aminophylline, bleomycin, erythromycin, and others. Ensure proper compatibility before administration.
- Useful interactions: Ascorbic acid can increase the half-life of paracetamol and enhance iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
Side Effects
- General: Ceevit DS is generally safe, with little toxicity. However, large doses may cause:
- Diarrhea, abdominal bloating, and iron over-absorption, especially in patients with conditions like thalassemia, sideroblastic anemia, and hemochromatosis.
- Hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, and hemolysis may occur in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
- Excessive doses (more than 5 g/day) during pregnancy can result in fetal abortion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy: Vitamin C is safe when taken in normal doses during pregnancy. However, taking more than 5 g per day may cause abortion.
- Lactation: Vitamin C can be taken safely during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
- Mega-doses (more than 1000 mg daily) during pregnancy have been associated with scurvy in neonates.
- Contraindicated for patients with hyperoxaluria due to the risk of developing kidney stones.
- Ascorbic acid can cause false positive reactions in certain analytical tests for glucose, uric acid, creatinine, and occult blood.
