Note: Always consult a registered healthcare professional before using this medicine.

Pharmacology

Cerox CV combines two active ingredients, Cefuroxime and Clavulanic Acid, to combat bacterial infections.

  • Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is bactericidal and works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cefuroxime is effective against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including many strains that produce beta-lactamase enzymes.

  • Clavulanic Acid acts as a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Derived from Streptomyces clavuligerus, it prevents the degradation of Cefuroxime by beta-lactamase enzymes, thus enhancing the efficacy of Cefuroxime against resistant bacteria.

The combination of Cefuroxime and Clavulanic Acid effectively treats bacterial infections that may otherwise be resistant to standard antibiotics.

Interactions

  • Probenecid: Concurrent administration of probenecid with Cerox CV increases the serum concentration of Cefuroxime by 50%, potentially enhancing its effects.

  • Reduced Gastric Acidity: Drugs that reduce stomach acid may lower the bioavailability of Cefuroxime, affecting its absorption and reducing its effectiveness when taken after meals.

Contraindications

Cerox CV should not be used in individuals who have:

  • Known allergies to cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • A history of Pseudomembranous Colitis.

Side Effects

Cerox CV is generally well-tolerated, but some individuals may experience:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal discomfort.
  • Prolonged use may cause an overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms.
  • Rare side effects (<0.2%) include renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis, angioedema, rash, pruritus, and serum sickness (e.g., urticaria).

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy: Cefuroxime-Clavulanic Acid should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. It can be used safely during the later stages of pregnancy for treating infections like urinary tract infections.
