Pharmacology
Dicycloverine hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Colicon, is an antispasmodic and anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) agent. Chemically, it is classified as [Bicyclohexyl-]1-carboxylic acid, 2-(diethylamino) ethyl ester, hydrochloride. This medication works by relieving smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal tract.
Dicycloverine specifically targets muscarinic (cholinergic) receptors found on the involuntary muscles of the gut walls. By blocking these receptors, it prevents the body’s natural chemicals from triggering muscle contractions, leading to muscle relaxation and relief from colic and abdominal spasms.
The injectable form of dicycloverine is a sterile, pyrogen-free, aqueous solution intended for intramuscular administration only (not for intravenous use). Oral administration is preferred as soon as possible.
Dosage & Administration
For oral administration:
- Adults: 10 to 20 mg, three times a day.
- Children (above 6 months): 5 to 10 mg, three times a day.
For injectable administration:
- Adults: 80 mg per day, divided into four intramuscular doses. This form is for short-term use only (1–2 days), and oral therapy should begin as soon as possible.
- Children: The dosage must be determined by a physician.
Use this medication only as directed by a registered physician.
Side Effects
Possible side effects of dicycloverine include:
- Insomnia
- Pupil dilation (mydriasis)
- Blurred vision (cycloplegia)
- Increased eye pressure
- Urinary hesitancy
- Heart palpitations
- Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
Pregnancy & Lactation
Dicycloverine is classified as Pregnancy Category B. Animal studies have not shown teratogenic or embryocidal effects. However, it should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. There is limited data on whether dicycloverine is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be exercised when administering it to lactating mothers.

- Headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blurred vision
- Dilated pupils
- Dry, flushed skin
- Dizziness
