  • Vitamin D USP 200 IU

Each DX tablet contains:

  • Calcium Carbonate USP (from coral source) 1500 mg, providing 600 mg of elemental Calcium
  • Vitamin D USP 400 IU

Each effervescent tablet contains:

  • Calcium Carbonate USP (from coral source) 1500 mg, providing 600 mg of elemental Calcium
  • Vitamin D3 400 IU (as Cholecalciferol USP)

Pharmacology Calcium plays a vital role in various bodily functions, and its deficiency can have severe effects. It is essential for bone health and is particularly effective in preventing and treating osteoporosis. Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and stimulates bone formation. The combination of calcium and vitamin D has been clinically proven to support bone growth and prevent fractures. The calcium in CoralCal-DX is sourced from coral, which closely resembles the structure of human bone, ensuring better absorption. Vitamin D3 further aids in calcium absorption and helps maintain calcium balance in the body.

Dosage & Administration

  • Take one tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as prescribed by a physician.
  • For effervescent tablets, dissolve one tablet in a glass of water, stir, and drink immediately.
  • Consuming after meals enhances absorption.

Drug Interactions

  • Thiazide diuretics reduce calcium excretion, increasing the risk of hypercalcemia. Regular serum calcium monitoring is advised.
  • Systemic corticosteroids decrease calcium absorption, potentially requiring a higher dose of CoralCal-DX.
  • Cholestyramine and paraffin oil can reduce vitamin D absorption.
  • Calcium carbonate may interfere with tetracycline absorption; these medications should be taken at different times (tetracyclines at least two hours before or 4-6 hours after calcium intake).
  • Hypercalcemia can enhance the toxicity of cardiac glycosides; monitoring of ECG and serum calcium is required.
  • When taken with bisphosphonates or sodium fluoride, CoralCal-DX should be taken at least three hours beforehand to ensure proper absorption.
  • Foods high in oxalic acid (e.g., spinach, rhubarb) and phytic acid (e.g., whole cereals) can inhibit calcium absorption. Calcium supplements should be avoided within two hours of consuming such foods.

Contraindications CoralCal-DX should not be used in individuals with:

  • Hypercalcemia or hyperparathyroidism
  • Hypercalciuria or kidney stones
  • Severe renal impairment
  • Hypersensitivity to any components of the formulation
  • Concomitant use of digoxin without proper calcium level monitoring

Side Effects Common side effects include:

  • Gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, vomiting, constipation)
  • Allergic reactions
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Dry mouth, decreased appetite, and drowsiness
  • Occasional skin rashes from vitamin D supplements

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation

  • The daily intake during pregnancy should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU vitamin D.
  • High doses of vitamin D have shown reproductive toxicity in animal studies. Excessive calcium and vitamin D intake during pregnancy should be avoided as it may impact fetal development.
  • Calcium and vitamin D pass into breast milk; supplementation should be carefully considered when giving additional vitamin D to the infant.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Long-term use requires monitoring of serum calcium levels and kidney function, especially in elderly patients or those on diuretics or cardiac glycosides.
  • Hypercalcemia or renal dysfunction warrants dose adjustment or discontinuation.
  • Vitamin D should be used with caution in patients with kidney impairment due to the risk of soft tissue calcification.
  • Patients with sarcoidosis may have an increased risk of vitamin D metabolism; their calcium levels should be closely monitored.
  • Immobilized patients with osteoporosis should use CoralCal-DX cautiously due to a higher risk of hypercalcemia.
  • Patients taking additional vitamin D should have their total intake evaluated to prevent excessive dosage.

Overdose Effects Excessive intake can lead to hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcemia, with symptoms such as:

  • Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain
  • Fatigue, muscle weakness, mental confusion
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Bone pain, kidney stone formation, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias, coma, or death

Treatment of Overdose:

  • Discontinue calcium, vitamin D, and other interacting medications (thiazide diuretics, lithium, vitamin A, cardiac glycosides).
  • Stomach emptying in unconscious patients.
  • Rehydration and treatment with loop diuretics, bisphosphonates, calcitonin, and corticosteroids as needed.
  • Monitor electrolytes, renal function, and ECG.

Therapeutic Class Specific mineral and vitamin combination preparations

Storage Conditions

  • Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
