Description
Indications
This ophthalmic solution is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis caused by the following susceptible strains:
- Aerobic Gram-positive microorganisms: Corynebacterium species, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus hominis, Staphylococcus warneri, Streptococcus pneumonia, Streptococcus viridans group.
- Aerobic Gram-negative microorganisms: Acinetobacter iwoffii, Haemophilus influenza, Haemophilus parainfluenzae.
Always use this medication as directed by a registered physician.
Pharmacology
Moxifloxacin works by inhibiting topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair. This action prevents bacterial growth and division.
Dosage & Administration
Apply one drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily for seven days.
Follow the advice of a registered physician before use.
Drug Interactions
No drug-drug interaction studies have been conducted with Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride.
Side Effects
The most common side effects (reported by 1-6% of patients) include:
- Eye irritation
- Fever
- Conjunctivitis
- Decreased visual acuity
- Dry eye
- Ocular discomfort, hyperemia, pain, pruritus, and tearing
- Subconjunctival hemorrhage
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use Moxifloxacin during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus. While it is presumed Moxifloxacin may be excreted in breast milk, caution is advised for breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination.
Use in Special Populations
- Pediatric Use: Safety in infants below four months is not proven, but studies indicate it may be used safely in infants younger than one month.
- Geriatric Use: No differences in safety and effectiveness were noted between elderly and younger patients.
Overdose Effects
Accidental ingestion poses minimal risk since a 5 ml bottle contains only 25 mg Moxifloxacin—far below the recommended daily oral dose.

Storage Conditions
Store in a cool, dry place away from light and out of children’s reach. After opening, do not use the solution after one month.
