Description
This oral preparation contains iron, folic acid, and zinc, and is used to treat deficiencies in these essential nutrients.

Pharmacology
Ferrous Ascorbate, Folic Acid, and Zinc are a combination of three vital nutritional supplements.

• Ferrous Ascorbate is a blend of iron and vitamin C. Iron helps replenish the body’s iron stores and addresses iron deficiency anemia, while Vitamin C enhances the absorption of iron in the body.
• Folic Acid is a form of vitamin B that is crucial for the production of red blood cells, which are responsible for oxygen transport throughout the body. Folic acid is particularly important during pregnancy for the development of the baby’s brain and spinal cord.
• Zinc is a micromineral that plays an essential role in various bodily functions and provides overall nutritional support.

Dosage & Administration

• Adults & Elderly: One tablet daily, either before or after meals (as iron absorption is not significantly affected by food), or as directed by your physician. In more severe cases, two tablets a day may be required, based on your healthcare provider’s recommendation.
• Pediatric Patients: The safety and efficacy of this medication in pediatric patients have not been established.

Interactions

• Iron may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. Therefore, Hemofix FZ should not be taken within two hours of tetracycline administration.
• To minimize gastrointestinal discomfort, take the medication with meals.
• The absorption of iron may be reduced if taken concurrently with penicillamine or antacids.
• In patients with renal failure, there may be a risk of zinc accumulation.

Contraindications
This product is contraindicated in patients with hemolytic anemia, hypersensitivity to any of its components, or increased body iron content.

Side Effects
Side effects associated with iron, folic acid, and zinc supplementation are typically mild and temporary. These may include epigastric pain, nausea, constipation, vomiting, diarrhea, and heartburn. Allergic reactions may occur following the oral or parenteral administration of folic acid.

Pregnancy & Lactation
If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before starting or continuing this medication.
Iron supplementation during the first trimester of pregnancy should only be used if there is clear evidence of iron deficiency. However, iron supplementation is recommended throughout the rest of the pregnancy, particularly when additional zinc is needed.

Precautions & Warnings
Patients at risk for iron overload, such as those with conditions like hematochromatosis, hemolytic anemia, or red cell aplasia, should use this medication with caution. Failure to respond to treatment may indicate other underlying causes of anemia and warrants further investigation.

Overdose Effects
Acute iron overdose can have variable symptoms. Initial signs may include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, black stools, blood in vomit, hypotension, tachycardia, metabolic acidosis, hyperglycemia, dehydration, drowsiness, pallor, cyanosis, fatigue, seizures, shock, and even coma.
