Description

Indications:
Risedon belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates. It works by altering the bone remodeling process, slowing bone loss, and increasing bone mass, which helps prevent fractures. Risedon is prescribed for:

  • Preventing and treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
  • Increasing bone mass in men with osteoporosis.
  • Preventing and treating osteoporosis caused by long-term steroid use (e.g., prednisone).
  • Treating Paget’s disease of bone in men and women.

Always consult a registered physician before use.

Pharmacology:
Bone is constantly being broken down and rebuilt. In osteoporosis, bone breakdown outpaces formation, leading to thinner, fragile bones and a higher risk of fractures, especially in the spine, hips, and wrists. Risedon binds to hydroxyapatite crystals in bones, inhibiting osteoclast activity and reducing bone resorption.

Dosage:

  • Postmenopausal Osteoporosis (to reduce vertebral fractures):
    • 5 mg once daily, 35 mg once weekly, or 150 mg once monthly.
  • Postmenopausal Osteoporosis (to reduce hip fractures):
    • 5 mg once daily or 35 mg once weekly.
  • Prevention of Osteoporosis in Postmenopausal Women:
    • 5 mg once daily.
  • Osteoporosis Due to Steroid Use:
    • 5 mg once daily.
  • Osteoporosis in Men at High Risk of Fractures:
    • 35 mg once weekly.

Take the tablet on the same day each week or month as prescribed.

Administration:

  • Take Risedon on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before the first food, drink (other than water), or medication of the day.
  • If taking between meals, wait at least 2 hours before and after eating.
  • If taking in the evening, wait at least 2 hours after the last meal.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water (120 ml or more) while sitting or standing upright. Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking the tablet.
  • If a dose is missed:
    • 5 mg tablet: Take as soon as remembered, following the instructions above.
    • 35 mg tablet: Take one tablet the morning after remembering, then resume the weekly schedule. Do not take two tablets in one day.
    • 150 mg tablet: Take the missed tablet the morning after remembering if the next monthly dose is more than 7 days away.

Supplemental calcium and vitamin D are recommended if dietary intake is insufficient.

Interactions:

  • Avoid taking antacids, supplements, or medications containing aluminum, calcium, magnesium, or other minerals within 30 minutes of Risedon, as they can interfere with absorption.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking aspirin, NSAIDs, or other medications.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to Risedon or its components.
  • Hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels).
  • Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 ml/min).
