Pharmacology
Bone tissue undergoes continuous remodeling, with old bone breaking down and new bone forming. Osteoporosis occurs when bone loss outpaces new bone formation, leading to fragile bones prone to fractures—especially in the spine, hips, and wrists. Postmenopausal women are at a higher risk due to hormonal changes.
Risedronate binds to hydroxyapatite crystals in bones, working as an antiresorptive agent. It inhibits osteoclast activity, reducing excessive bone breakdown while allowing bone formation to continue. Additionally, calcium plays a crucial role in regulating parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, minimizing bone turnover and reducing fracture risk.
