Solo Nasal Drop

Description

Indications

• Eye/Ear/Nasal Solution: Indicated for moisturizing dry nasal membranes, especially when caused by cold or allergy medications. It also helps with dryness from dry climates or airplane travel, assists in dissolving mucus from stuffy noses, and clears the nasal passages after surgery. Additionally, this sterile saline solution is used to cleanse various parts of the body (such as wounds and body cavities) and medical equipment (e.g., bandages, catheters, drainage tubes). It can also serve as a diluent for medications used to irrigate the body (e.g., bacitracin, polymyxin).
• Intravenous Solution: Used in the management of metabolic alkalosis, gastro-enteritis, and during and after surgery. It can also serve as a priming fluid for hemodialysis and is commonly used as a diluent for drug infusions and in sterile irrigation and dilution processes.

Pharmacology

• Nasal Drop: Sodium Chloride nasal drop is an isotonic saline solution, a non-drug product used to moisturize nasal membranes, providing comfort with prolonged use. It dissolves and softens thick or crusty mucus, making it easier to clear the nasal passages, thereby promoting easier breathing. Excess sodium is primarily excreted by the kidneys, with small amounts lost through feces and sweat.
• Nasal Spray: Sodium Chloride 0.9% nasal spray also moistens the nasal passages by dissolving and softening thick or crusty mucus, aiding in mucus removal and improving breathing. It is particularly useful for babies and young children who cannot blow their noses, helping to remove mucus with a nasal bulb syringe. Sodium is mostly excreted via the kidneys with small amounts lost through feces and sweat.

Dosage

• Nasal Drop:
  • Nasal Congestion: For infants, place 1-2 drops of Sodium Chloride nasal wash in each nostril before feedings to relieve congestion and improve suckling.
  • Ear Wax Removal: Warm the nasal wash to room temperature before use. Lie on one side and fill the ear canal with the drops, then wait for a few minutes before standing. Use 3-4 drops 3-4 times daily for 3-5 days.
• Nasal Spray:
  • Newborn to 12 months: 1 spray in each nostril 2-3 times a day or as directed by a physician.
  • Children over 12 months & Adults: 1-2 sprays in each nostril 2-3 times a day or as directed by a physician.
• Eye Use: Place 1-2 drops in each eye as needed.
• Ear Use: Place 3-4 drops into the affected ear(s) 3-4 times a day for 3-5 days.
• Intravenous Solution: The dosage for intravenous use depends on several factors such as age, weight, and clinical condition of the patient. Typically, the adult dose is around 1000 ml of 0.9% injection.

Administration

• Nasal Spray:
  • Shake the bottle gently and remove the dust cover.
  • Hold the bottle with your forefinger and middle finger on each side of the nozzle, and your thumb underneath. Press down until a fine spray appears.
  • For first-time use or if unused for a week or more, press the applicator several times until a fine mist comes out.
  • Blow your nose gently to clear nostrils.
  • Close one nostril, insert the applicator into the open nostril, tilt your head slightly forward, and spray while inhaling through your nose.
  • Repeat for the other nostril if necessary.
  • Cleaning: Wash the applicator and dust cover with warm water, let them dry naturally, and reassemble the spray after drying.
• Intravenous Solution:
  • Inspect the infusion set and solution.
  • Open the Eurocap and prepare the administration set.
  • Insert the set’s spike into the Eurocap and connect it securely.
  • Check for any air in the tube, then attach the needle and clean the venipuncture site.
  • Secure the needle and tape, then begin the infusion at the recommended drip rate.

Contraindications
Do not share this medication with others, as it could increase the risk of infection.

Side Effects

• Eye/Ear/Nasal: No side effects are typically expected, though stinging, sneezing, increased nasal discharge, or a salty taste may occur in some cases.
• Intravenous: Possible reactions include febrile response, infection at the injection site, thrombosis, phlebitis, extravasation, and hypervolemia. If any adverse reactions occur, stop the infusion, assess the patient, and take appropriate measures.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Eye/Ear/Nasal: Consult your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding, as it is unknown whether the medication passes into breast milk.
• Intravenous: Pregnancy Category C. Sodium Chloride Injection has not been studied in animal reproduction. It should only be used in pregnant women if clearly needed.

Precautions & Warnings

• Eye/Ear/Nasal: Inform your doctor of any medical conditions, especially heart, lung, kidney problems, or if you have low potassium, high sodium levels, or allergies.
• Intravenous: Serum electrolyte levels should be monitored carefully. Use caution in patients with heart failure, edema, impaired renal function, or pre-eclampsia. Administer cautiously to young children and the elderly. Avoid excessive administration to prevent hypokalemia. Discontinue infusion if any adverse reactions occur, such as rigor.

Overdose Effects
There have been no reports of overdose with Sodium Chloride 0.9% nasal wash.

Therapeutic Class

• Intravenous fluid preparations, Nasal Decongestants, and Other Nasal Preparations.

Storage Conditions
Store at room temperature (15°C to 30°C), away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
