Vertina Plus 25 mg+50 mg
Description
Indications
This medication is indicated for the prevention and treatment of nausea, vomiting, dizziness, motion sickness, radiation sickness, and vertigo associated with vestibular system disorders, such as Meniere’s syndrome, labyrinthitis, and other vestibular disturbances.
Take as prescribed by a registered medical professional.
Pharmacology
Meclizine is an antihistamine derived from piperazine, primarily used as an antiemetic. It possesses antiemetic, anticholinergic, and antihistaminic properties. Meclizine works by reducing the sensitivity of the labyrinthine system. Its action may occur through nerve pathways leading to the vomiting center (VC) from the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ), peripheral nerve pathways, or other central nervous system (CNS) centers. Pyridoxine, also known as vitamin B6, is included to enhance the antiemetic effects and serve as a dietary supplement.
Dosage & Administration
For Adults and Children 12 years and older:
- Nausea and Vomiting: 25-50 mg daily or as directed by a physician.
- Motion Sickness: Take an initial dose of 25-50 mg 1 hour before travel. The dose may be repeated every 24 hours during the journey.
- Radiation Sickness: Take 50 mg, 2-12 hours prior to radiation therapy.
- Vertigo: Take 25-100 mg daily in divided doses.
- Prevention of nausea and vomiting with Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECP): 25-50 mg, 1 hour before the first dose of ECP; repeat if necessary within 24 hours.
The safety and efficacy for use in children under 12 years have not been established.
Take as prescribed by a registered medical professional.
Interaction
The central nervous system (CNS) depressant effects of Meclizine may be enhanced when taken with ethanol or other CNS depressants, such as benzodiazepines, barbiturates, tricyclic antidepressants, opiate agonists, skeletal muscle relaxants, and antihistamines. Concurrent use with other anticholinergic medications may intensify the anticholinergic effects of Meclizine. Additionally, Meclizine may increase the absorption of digoxin by reducing gastrointestinal motility.
Contraindications
Meclizine Hydrochloride and Pyridoxine Hydrochloride are contraindicated for individuals who are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients in this medication.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, and, in rare cases, blurred vision.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy: Meclizine is classified as Pregnancy Category B. Large-scale human studies have not shown any adverse effects on the fetus. It is considered the drug of first choice for treating nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, as it poses the least risk of teratogenicity.
- Lactation: The safety of Meclizine during breastfeeding has not been fully established.
Precautions & Warnings
Patients should be informed that Meclizine Hydrochloride may impair mental alertness or physical coordination, which could affect the ability to perform activities such as operating machinery or driving. Alcohol consumption should be avoided during treatment with Vertina Plus. Meclizine should be used with caution in individuals with asthma, glaucoma, or prostate enlargement due to its potential anticholinergic effects.
Overdose Effects
Symptoms of an overdose may include extreme excitability, seizures, drowsiness, and hallucinations. Treatment should consist of appropriate supportive and symptomatic care, and dialysis may be considered in severe cases.
Therapeutic Class
Anti-emetic drugs.
