Pharmacology
Acetylcysteine is a mucolytic agent that reduces the viscosity of secretions by splitting disulphide bonds in mucoproteins, with an antisecretory effect. This helps clear respiratory ducts and facilitate breathing. It also has anti-oxidant properties by neutralizing free radicals and serving as a precursor to glutathione, an important antioxidant, reducing inflammation in the respiratory system.
