Indications
Xiclav is prescribed for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:

• Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: Caused by Streptococcus pyogenes.
• Acute Bacterial Otitis Media: Caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis (including beta-lactamase producing strains), or Streptococcus pyogenes.
• Other bacterial infections where appropriate.

Pharmacology
Xiclav contains Cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, effectively eliminating a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including many beta-lactamase-producing strains.

Clavulanic Acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor derived from Streptomyces clavuligerus. It has a structure similar to beta-lactam antibiotics and works by binding irreversibly to beta-lactamase enzymes, preventing them from degrading Cefuroxime. This combination makes Xiclav effective against beta-lactam-resistant bacterial infections.

Dosage & Administration
Dosage varies based on age and infection type.

For Adolescents and Adults (13 years and older):

• Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 250 mg twice daily for 5-10 days
• Acute Bacterial Maxillary Sinusitis: 250 mg twice daily for 10 days
• Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis: 250-500 mg twice daily for 10 days
• Secondary Bacterial Infections of Acute Bronchitis: 250-500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days
• Uncomplicated Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: 250-500 mg twice daily for 10 days
• Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections: 250 mg twice daily for 7-10 days
• Uncomplicated Gonorrhea: 1000 mg as a single dose
• Community-Acquired Pneumonia: 250-500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days
• Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) Typhoid Fever: 500 mg twice daily for 10-14 days
• Early Lyme Disease: 500 mg twice daily for 20 days

For Pediatric Patients (3 months to 12 years):

• Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 20 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 5-10 days
• Acute Otitis Media: 30 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 10 days
• Acute Bacterial Maxillary Sinusitis: 30 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 10 days
• Impetigo: 30 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 10 days

Xiclav tablets can be taken with or without food.

Drug Interactions

• Probenecid: Increases Cefuroxime concentration by approximately 50%.
• Drugs reducing gastric acidity: May lower the bioavailability of Cefuroxime, reducing its effectiveness.

Contraindications

• Allergy to cephalosporin antibiotics.
• Patients with a history of Pseudomembranous Colitis.

Side Effects
