Description
Indications:
Zimax is an effective antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including:
- Respiratory Infections: Bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, and tonsillitis.
- Ear Infections: Otitis media.
- Skin Infections: Soft tissue infections.
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.
Pharmacology:
Azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. Its high tissue penetration ensures prolonged effectiveness even after stopping the medication.
Dosage:
- Adults: 500 mg once daily for 3 days or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg for the next 4 days.
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Single 1g dose.
- Children: 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days. Adjusted doses based on weight.
- IV Therapy: For community-acquired pneumonia or pelvic inflammatory disease, start with IV and switch to oral.
Administration:
- Take 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
- Reconstitute the suspension as per the instructions.
Precautions:
- Avoid use in patients with hepatic disease or hypersensitivity to macrolides.
- Monitor interactions with digoxin, cyclosporin, and warfarin.
Possible Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Rare cases of rash, photosensitivity, or cholestatic jaundice may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Azithromycin falls under Category B (no evidence of harm in animal studies). Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding only if no safer alternatives are available.
Storage:
Store in a dry, cool place away from light and heat. Keep out of children’s reach.
