Composition
Each capsule contains:
- Vitamin C – 60 mg
- Vitamin E – 30 mg
- Lutein (Pharmaceutical grade) – 6 mg
- Copper (as Cupric Oxide, Ph. grade) – 2 mg
- Zinc (as Zinc Oxide, BP) – 15 mg
Pharmacology
Vitamin C is present in high concentrations in the lens of the eye, significantly more than in the bloodstream. Long-term supplementation (over 10 years) has been linked to a lower risk of cataracts. It also plays a crucial role in neutralizing harmful free radicals, reducing oxidative stress.
Studies suggest that individuals with higher blood levels of Vitamin E have a reduced risk of cataracts, though the exact mechanism remains unclear. As an antioxidant, Vitamin E helps combat free radical damage, which can contribute to age-related eye disorders.
Lutein, a carotenoid primarily concentrated in the macula, has been shown to protect against oxidative and light-induced damage. Research indicates that a diet rich in Lutein may lower the risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
Zinc, an essential trace element, plays a critical role in various enzymatic functions. A mild deficiency may lead to impaired taste and smell perception and delayed wound healing, while severe deficiency can result in skin lesions, hair loss, diarrhea, increased infection susceptibility, and growth failure in children.
Copper is essential for overall growth, skeletal integrity, and nervous system development. As a component of various enzymes, it participates in numerous metabolic processes.
