Xiclav 500 mg+125 mg
Description
Xiclav 500 mg Tablet
Indications
Xiclav 500 mg Tablet is prescribed for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis due to Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Acute bacterial otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis (beta-lactamase-producing strains), or Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Sinusitis, bronchitis, skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI), urinary tract infections (UTI), gonorrhea, pneumonia, typhoid fever, and other bacterial infections as determined by a healthcare professional.
Pharmacology
Xiclav contains two active ingredients:
- Cefuroxime: A second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including many beta-lactamase-producing strains.
- Clavulanic Acid: A beta-lactamase inhibitor derived from Streptomyces clavuligerus. It prevents the degradation of cefuroxime by beta-lactamase enzymes, thereby enhancing its efficacy against resistant bacterial strains.

- Co-administration with probenecid increases cefuroxime levels in the blood.
- Medications that reduce gastric acidity may lower cefuroxime’s bioavailability and affect absorption.
Contraindications
- Patients with known allergy to cephalosporin antibiotics.
- Patients with a history of pseudomembranous colitis.
Side Effects
Xiclav is generally well-tolerated, but some patients may experience:
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort.
- Rare cases of renal dysfunction, allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis, angioedema, rash), and serum sickness-like urticaria.
- Prolonged use may lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- While antibiotics should ideally be avoided in the first trimester, Xiclav can be used in later pregnancy to treat bacterial infections.
- Small amounts of cefuroxime and clavulanic acid are excreted in breast milk, so caution should be exercised when administered to breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients taking potent diuretics.
- Patients with a history of colitis should take this medication under medical supervision.
