Flupentixol and Melitracen tablets are prescribed for the treatment of:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depression
  • Apathy
  • Psychogenic depression
  • Depressive neuroses
  • Masked depression
  • Psychosomatic conditions associated with anxiety and apathy
  • Menopausal depression
  • Dysphoria and depression in individuals recovering from alcohol or drug dependence

Use this medication only as directed by a registered physician.

Pharmacology
This formulation contains two well-established compounds:

  • Flupentixol – A neuroleptic agent with both anxiolytic and antidepressant properties at low doses.
  • Melitracen – A bipolar thymoleptic that provides activating effects in minimal doses.

Together, these compounds create a balanced medication with antidepressant, anxiolytic, and stimulating properties. After oral administration, peak serum concentration is typically reached within approximately 4 hours for both active ingredients. The biological half-life of flupentixol is about 35 hours, while melitracen has a half-life of around 19 hours. The combination does not significantly alter the pharmacokinetics of either component.

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: Typically, 2 tablets per day—one in the morning and one at noon. In severe cases, the morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets.
  • Elderly Patients: 1 tablet in the morning.
  • Maintenance Dose: Usually, 1 tablet in the morning. If experiencing severe restlessness or insomnia, additional sedative treatment may be required during the acute phase.

Use this medication only as directed by a registered physician.

Drug Interactions

  • May enhance the effects of alcohol, barbiturates, and other central nervous system (CNS) depressants.
  • Concurrent use with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors may result in hypertensive crises.
  • Neuroleptics and thymoleptics may reduce the antihypertensive effects of guanethidine and similar medications.
  • Thymoleptics may increase the effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline.

Contraindications
This medication should not be used in the following conditions:

  • Recovery phase following a myocardial infarction
  • Bundle-branch conduction defects
  • Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Acute intoxication with alcohol, barbiturates, or opioids
  • Patients who have used an MAO inhibitor within the past two weeks
  • Individuals with hyperactivity or excessive excitability, as the activating effects may intensify these traits

Side Effects

  • Transient restlessness
  • Insomnia

This medication should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional.

Precautions & Warnings

  • If transitioning from sedative-based tranquilizers, gradual withdrawal is recommended.

Overdose Effects
In cases of overdose, symptoms primarily stem from melitracen toxicity, particularly anticholinergic effects. Less frequently, extrapyramidal symptoms related to flupentixol may occur. Treatment includes:

  • Gastric lavage and administration of activated charcoal as soon as possible
  • Supportive care for respiratory and cardiovascular function
  • Avoid epinephrine (adrenaline) in overdose management
  • Diazepam may be used to manage convulsions, while biperiden can help with extrapyramidal symptoms
