Indications
Cerox CV is prescribed for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis – Caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media – Caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis (beta-lactamase producing strains), or Streptococcus pyogenes
- Acute Bacterial Sinusitis
- Bronchitis & Pneumonia – Including acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Gonorrhea – Uncomplicated cases
- Typhoid Fever – Including multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains
- Early Lyme Disease
Pharmacology
Cerox CV contains a combination of Cefuroxime and Clavulanic Acid:
- Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal action. It effectively targets Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including beta-lactamase-producing strains, by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
- Clavulanic Acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor derived from Streptomyces clavuligerus. It prevents the degradation of Cefuroxime by beta-lactamase enzymes, enhancing its effectiveness against resistant bacterial infections.
Dosage & Administration
For Adolescents & Adults (13 years and older):

- Acute Bacterial Sinusitis: 250 mg twice daily for 10 days
- Acute Bronchitis (Bacterial Exacerbation): 250-500 mg twice daily for 10 days
- Skin & Soft Tissue Infections: 250-500 mg twice daily for 10 days
- Urinary Tract Infections: 250 mg twice daily for 7-10 days
- Uncomplicated Gonorrhea: 1000 mg as a single dose
- Community-Acquired Pneumonia: 250-500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days
- MDR Typhoid Fever: 500 mg twice daily for 10-14 days
- Early Lyme Disease: 500 mg twice daily for 20 days
For Pediatric Patients (3 months to 12 years):
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 20 mg/kg/day in divided doses for 5-10 days
- Acute Otitis Media & Sinusitis: 30 mg/kg/day in divided doses for 10 days
- Impetigo: 30 mg/kg/day in divided doses for 10 days
Administration: The tablet form may be taken with or without food.
Drug Interactions
- Probenecid increases the serum concentration of Cefuroxime-Clavulanic Acid by approximately 50%.
- Gastric acid-reducing agents may lower Cefuroxime’s bioavailability and reduce absorption effectiveness.
